Seven tips to save on car costs

Presented by La Turquoise Agency
Buying a car comes with its own set of costs that multiply as the odometer ticks over. That's why your car budget naturally includes costs like gas, insurance, registration, repairs and so on. Did you know that you can lower your car costs? Here are some tips to save you money.

1. Slow down

Is how you drive economical? Slowing down not only saves lives, it also saves gas. By driving at 100 km/hr instead of 120 km/hr, you use 20% less gas. You also use less gas if you accelerate smoothly and gradually, and drive at a constant speed.

2. Choose a hybrid or electric vehicle

Driving a hybrid or electric vehicle can save you money in the long run. How, you might ask? First, by qualifying for government grants to buy these kinds of vehicles. Second, by buying less gas (if any at all!). According to Hydro-Québec, a small electric car costs around $2.25 / 100 km to drive compared with around $9 / 100 km for its gasoline-powered counterpart. So, when you add up government incentives, gas savings and lower maintenance costs, both hybrid and electric vehicles end up becoming profitable options after a few years.

3. Sign up for my Drive™

Have you heard about Intact Insurance's my Drive™ program? It can save you up to 25%* on your insurance premium if you drive safely. Talk to your insurance agent!

4. Use carpooling and active transportation

Do you really have to get behind the wheel very day? There are several alternatives for getting around: public transit, carpooling with a co-worker, and, of course, walking or cycling, if feasible. Another tip is to combine your errands to make as few trips as possible. In recent years, many cities have introduced measures to encourage people to travel by public transit or opt for active transportation. Take advantage of these alternatives. And challenge yourself to leave your car at home one or more days a week!

5. Bundle insurance policies

Are your home and vehicle(s) insured with the same company? You can get major discounts if you have multiple insurance policies with the same company – for example, for both home and auto, or for several vehicles.  By bundling your insurance policies, you can even qualify for exclusive benefits in addition to premium discounts. Ask your agency for more information.

6. Perform preventive maintenance

A poorly maintained car can use up to 25% more gas. Are your car’s tires inflated to the right pressure? Incorrect tire pressure is one of the most common causes of increased gas consumption, and can lead to premature wear on tires and even on the braking system.

Poor maintenance can also cause more serious damage to parts that are more expensive to repair. That's why it's always worth following your dealer's or garage's maintenance schedule and make the necessary repairs at the first sign of damage or wear and tear. To make sure you keep to your maintenance schedule, book your appointments in advance!

7. Plan when to fill up

Planning when and where to fill your car’s gas tank can also save money. Gas prices vary from service station to service station and even from day to day. Pay attention! Shop around and fill up at the right time. Gas up when fuel prices are down, and take advantage of discount days. Before setting off on a trip, compare prices at the pump by using online tools or apps that provide actual daily gas prices for different regions in real time.

There are many ways to save money while enjoying the freedom of the road. Remember: to save money, it’s essential to drive responsibly – and have the right insurance coverage. Contact La Turquoise Agency for a quote!
