Program details
As an “All Risks’’ commercial policyholder at Intact Insurance, you could be eligible for a refund for the cost of removing snow, up to a maximum of $1,000 for each commercial building.
To benefit from this program, you just have to:
- get the snow clearing work done;
- take photographs before and after the snow is cleared from the roof;
- send the pictures and your snow removal invoice to your broker within the next 60 days.
To learn more, talk to your broker.
Take a few moments to review your building
- Assess snow and ice accumulation on your roof. Keep an eye out for patches or layers of compacted snow under freshly fallen snow. Packed and older snow, or layers of water and ice, are much heavier than fresh snow.
- Look for any blocked drains, eaves troughs, downspouts or ice dams. Obstructed eaves troughs cause snow and ice to be trapped on roofs, which increases the weight and could weaken the structure of your roof.
- Pay close attention when buildings have the following characteristics: surface area of 5,000 square feet or more (per floor), more than 10 years old, wood frame.
Appropriate action
If you notice any cracks, splits or sags in the roof or if there are severe roof leaks:
- Remove any mobile equipment.
- Cover equipment and supplies with waterproof tarps to avoid water damage.
- Back up your computers.
In case of immediate danger, evacuate the building.
Snow removal by employees
We strongly advise that you call upon snow removal specialists to do the job. However, if you have the work done by your own employees, Intact Insurance will reimburse the salary paid to your employees for removing the snow, up to a maximum of $1,000. You must document the number of employees and the number of hours it took to remove the snow. Ensure the proper safety protocols are in place for any employee on a slippery, snowy roof.
