Mandatory liability insurance

If you like to ride in the wild outdoors on your snowmobile or ATV, you're required in Quebec to carry a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance under the Act respecting off-highway vehicles or face a fine of between $375 and $750.

What's liability insurance for?

The purpose of liability insurance is to compensate you for any bodily injury or property damage you may cause to someone if you cause an accident, regardless of the location. It also covers the repair of your vehicle if the accident was not your fault. This insurance protects not only you as the owner, but also anyone else who rides on your snowmobile or ATV.

The importance of having coverage in Quebec

You should know that the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) does not provide compensation if a snowmobile or ATV accident results in injury or death, unless a vehicle covered by it is involved. On the other hand, your insurer will compensate you for the damage, according to the terms of your insurance contract. Make sure you are adequately cover for your needs and type of vehicles.

Trail permit

In addition to liability insurance, you must purchase a trail permit in order to ride a snowmobile or ATV on Quebec's trails. Depending on how often you ride, you can purchase a sticker for the entire year, a season, a week, a few days, or even just one day.

A better deal

Why not opt for a two-for-one? With the purchase of their trail permit, members of the Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec (FCMQ) and the Fédération québécoise des Clubs Quads (FQCQ) can obtain $1,000,000 in liability insurance from Intact Insurance, the official insurer of both federations. If members want more protection, they can increase the amount of coverage to $2,000,000 for a small extra cost.

If you choose this package, you can enjoy your favourite sport in complete tranquillity. You'll be well protected if you have an accident and are found responsible for causing bodily injury or property damage to someone else. New riders tend to choose this package for their four wheelers.

Protect your vehicle as well

If you're at fault in a collision, liability insurance protects you from damage to someone else's snowmobile or ATV. If your vehicle is damaged in an accident and it's your fault, you'll have to cover the cost of repairing it. Liability insurance only covers repairs to your snowmobile or ATV if you were not at fault in a collision.

It's therefore in your best interest to take out comprehensive insurance. You can get it with My snowmobile and me and My ATV and me* coverage from Intact Insurance. With either coverage, you'll be well protected if your vehicle is in an accident or even declared a total write-off as a result of a collision you were responsible for.

Both these types of coverage provide you with other benefits at no additional cost, such as $10,000 life insurance in case of death or dismemberment. These products also include protection for accessories and equipment for ATVs and snowmobiles, as well as six months' coverage for trips in Canada or the United States.

Additional services

You can also get help with preparing itineraries for off-road trips in the backcountry, as well as health assistance and even legal advice. Another benefit with My Snowmobile and Me is free roadside assistance. You can request help three times a year to tow your vehicle within a 100-km radius, boost a battery, and even have gas delivered if you ever run out. These are services that can make a real difference when you're stuck, in the snow or elsewhere!
