What's my Drive and how does it work?

Stroke 1 Copy

my Drive gives you the chance to have a car insurance price that’s right for you. Available through the Intact Insurance App, my Drive assesses your driving behaviour using your phone's GPS and motion sensors to offer you a personalized premium at renewal (the “Adjustment”). Safe driving behaviour could help you save on your insurance by up to 25%, whereas drivers who take risks on the road could see their price increase by up to 25%.

Any or all principal drivers listed on the policy can enrol in my Drive whether or not they are the policyholder or a named insured. Adjustments to the premium for each vehicle on your policy will be based on the driving behaviour of the Enrolled Driver(s). As a result, if you are not the policyholder or a named insured, you must be authorized by the policyholder or the named insured in order to enrol in my Drive. Keep in mind, once you've enrolled in my Drive even if you or any other Enrolled Driver unenrolls or is removed from my Drive, we may still continue to use driving behaviour captured by my Drive to make Adjustments.

How do I join my Drive?

Stroke 1 Copy

Joining my Drive is quick and easy! If you are the policyholder, simply download the Intact Insurance App, and follow the instructions to accept the Terms of Use and to give access to the required settings on your smartphone. You are now ready to start driving ! For more information, visit intact.ca/en/personal-insurance/online-services/my-drive. If you would like to enroll any other principal drivers in my Drive or if you have any other questions, please contact your broker or insurance representative.

Not all principal drivers need to enroll in my Drive and Adjustments will only be applied to the premium of the vehicle(s) with Enrolled Driver(s). Your premium could decrease as much as 25% with safe driving behaviour or increase as much as 25% for those who take risks on the road.

Keep in mind, once you've enrolled in my Drive, even if you decide to unenroll we may still continue to use your driving behaviour captured by my Drive to adjust your premium. However, you can join again as long as you still meet my Drive's eligibility criteria. If Intact Insurance ended your participation in my Drive for misuse of the app, you could only join again at Intact Insurance’s discretion. Please contact your broker or insurance representative to discuss re-enrolment.

What’s an Activation Discount?

Stroke 1 Copy

It's a one-time discount of 10% that's applied to the premium of your car insurance once you activate my Drive. This discount is only for new customers who activate my Drive and you will benefit from it until your car insurance policy is renewed. Then, this discount is replaced by your personalized premium based on your driving habits.

Can I withdraw from my Drive at any time?

Stroke 1 Copy

Yes, you can contact your broker or insurance representative to end your participation in my Drive at any time. However, your premium may decrease or increase depending on your previously collected driving data upon subsequent renewals. If the activation discount is present, it would be removed.

How will my personalized premium apply when there is more than one car and driver on the policy?

Stroke 1 Copy

If you are enrolled to my Drive, we will adjust your car insurance premium based on your driving habits. We will also adjust the car(s) insurance premium(s) of other Enrolled Drivers on your insurance policy based on their driving habits. There will be no Adjustment on your car insurance policy for principal drivers who are not enrolled in my Drive.

For example:

There are 2 vehicles on the policy with Enrolled Drivers: The premium for each car will be adjusted according to the driving habits of that car’s Enrolled Driver.

There are 2 vehicles on the policy and only one has an Enrolled Driver: The price will be adjusted for only one car according to the driving habits of that car’s Enrolled Driver.

Can I enrol multiple vehicles from separate Intact Insurance automobile policies?

Stroke 1 Copy

You cannot enrol in my Drive on multiple Intact Insurance policies. However, if you are listed as the principal driver on multiple vehicles insured under separate Intact Insurance automobile policies, your Adjustment will also be applied to those vehicles automatically. Please keep in mind that if you are not the policyholder or named insured on any applicable automobile insurance policy, you must obtain the consent of policyholder(s) and/or named insured(s) prior to enrolling.

Can additional principal drivers on my policy join my Drive?

Stroke 1 Copy

Yes! Any driver listed as a principal driver on your policy can join my Drive.

What happens if I drive my car for business use?

Stroke 1 Copy

If you’re driving for business, your trips will still count towards your Adjustment.

Can I join my Drive if I’m an Uber, Lyft or commercial driver?

Stroke 1 Copy

my Drive is designed for personal use and/or personal business use only. If you're driving for commercial reasons (Uber, Lyft, etc.), you will need to visit the “All Trips” section of the app and set the toggle to "I was a passenger on this trip" within 30 days of completing the trip. You can also contact us at 1-855-251-6977 if you need help to correct any tagged information.

What happens if I drive my car for business use?

Stroke 1 Copy

If you’re driving for business, your trips will still count towards your Adjustment.

For the purposes of these FAQs, “you” and “your” refer to any principal driver of a private passenger vehicle, whether or not they are the policyholder or a named insured, who enrols in my Drive and who meets all the eligibility criteria (“Enrolled Drivers”).

Set up

What type of smartphone do I need to have to use my Drive?

Stroke 1 Copy

You will need an iPhone running iOS 14 or higher, or an Android device running version 8.0 or higher. Depending on your type of smartphone, the performance of the my Drive program may vary as certain sensors behave differently in different devices.

How do I download my Drive?

Stroke 1 Copy

Depending on your smartphone settings, the Intact Insurance App will update automatically with my Drive or you will be prompted to confirm the update. If you don't have the Intact Insurance App, you can download it for free from the App Store© or Google Play™.

Why do you need permission to use my location?

Stroke 1 Copy

my Drive won't work unless you turn on location services in your smartphone settings. Your location allows us to detect driving behaviour, such as changes in speed and when you start a trip. It also helps us to identify whether you're the driver or a passenger.

Why do you need permission to access my iPhone’s motion sensors?

Stroke 1 Copy

We need access to your iPhone's motion and fitness data for its accelerometer and gyroscope sensors. The accelerometer measures acceleration and helps us determine how fast your phone is moving. Whereas the gyroscope detects which direction it's pointing in.

Why do you need permission to make and manage phone calls on my Android device?

Stroke 1 Copy

Intact Insurance will never track or record your phone calls through the app. The information received is used to assess your driving and detect if you’re driving distracted. It also allows the Intact Insurance App to connect you to 911 after a crash.

How do you know if I’m the driver or just a passenger?

Stroke 1 Copy

The app uses state-of-the-art technology to analyze your driving habits and phone movements to detect if you're the driver, passenger or using a different form of transportation (e.g. public transit). If one of your trips is inaccurate, you can adjust it in the app within 30 days of completing a trip.

How much of my smartphone’s battery will be used by my Drive?

Stroke 1 Copy

Like any app that uses your location, my Drive will consume an average of 3% to 6% of your smartphone's battery life per day. This is a small amount when you're not driving, and slightly more while you're taking a trip. Remember, if your battery is lower than 20% or your smartphone is in power-saving mode, your trips will not be recorded!

Do I need to have a data plan to use my Drive?

Stroke 1 Copy

Yes, you must have a data plan with internet access in order to collect and transfer your driving data to us.

How much of my data plan will be used?

Stroke 1 Copy

Generally, between 30 and 60 MB per month will be used. This is a very small fraction of the average data plan (1000 – 2000 MB or more per month).

Troubleshooting

I’ve followed all the steps. Why doesn’t my Drive appear in my app?

Stroke 1 Copy

If you already have the Intact Insurance App and cannot access my Drive, please try logging out and logging back in. If you still can't access it, try deleting the app and downloading it again or contact us at 1-855-251-6977 and a member of our customer service team will guide you through activating my Drive.

Why does my trip’s starting point not match my actual location?

Stroke 1 Copy

In order to determine your trip's starting point, you need to start driving. As a result, there's a delay of 300 metres before we can detect movement and pinpoint your location.

Why don’t I see my latest trip?

Stroke 1 Copy

It may occasionally happen that a trip is not recorded due to:

  • No internet connection;
  • Battery is lower than 20%;
  • Smartphone is in power-saving mode;
  • Permission is disabled;
  • Application is not running in the background;
  • Application is experiencing technical difficulties.

I wasn’t the driver! How do I change my Trip summary?

Stroke 1 Copy

Don’t worry! In the event that a trip has been misclassified, go to “Trip summary” and select edit to change your status in the “About this trip” section within 30 days of completing the trip. This trip will then be removed from your Trip Summary. You can also contact us at 1-855-251-6977 if you need help to correct any tagged information.

Someone else was using my phone while I was driving. What now?

Stroke 1 Copy

Just go to “Trip summary” and select edit to change your status in the “About this trip” section within 30 days of completing the trip. The event will then be removed from your Trip summary.

What happens if I don’t drive for a while?

Stroke 1 Copy

As long as we have recorded enough driving behaviour (i.e., if you drive 500 kilometres (“km”) or more), we can apply your Adjustment to your premium when your car insurance is renewed. If you did not drive at least 500 km, you might not receive any Adjustment or your Adjustment might have a smaller impact. We'll start considering your trips once you start driving again. The more you drive the more significant your Adjustment becomes.

What happens if I don’t activate my Drive?

Stroke 1 Copy

It's important to activate my Drive in the Intact Insurance App within 15 days of the effective date of your enrolment into the Program or within 15 days of the date we send the text message (SMS) to you confirming your enrolment in my Drive, whichever is later. Otherwise, we could cancel your enrolment, and if an Activation Discount is present, it would be removed.

What happens if I get a new or different type of smartphone?

Stroke 1 Copy

You will need to download the Intact Insurance App again. There's no need to re-enroll in my Drive as all your information will be stored.

What do I do if I get a new phone number?

Stroke 1 Copy

Just download the Application again and log in, your profile and trips will still be there. The policyholder or named insured must also notify their broker or insurance representative so they can update the insurance policy accordingly.

What happens if I deleted the Intact Insurance App?

Stroke 1 Copy

Don't worry! If you delete the app by mistake, you just need to download it again and follow the prompts to activate my Drive. All your information will be stored, and you can continue driving. Remember - if we can't record your trips your Adjustment may be affected.

What should I do if there’s a mistake in my driving data?

Stroke 1 Copy

We're here to help! Contact us at 1-855-251-6977 if there's an error in your driving data, or if you're experiencing technical difficulties.

Stats and driving behaviour

How do you calculate the Adjustment of my personalized premium?

Stroke 1 Copy

Premiums for all eligible vehicles with Enrolled Drivers will be adjusted upon each renewal (provided sufficient driving data was captured) based on a variety of driving events such as:

  • Number of trips where an Enrolled Driver was tagged as the driver;
  • Duration of trips;
  • Hard braking events;
  • Rapid acceleration events;
  • Cornering and turns;
  • Kilometres driven, and,
  • Distracted driving (e.g., using your smartphone while driving).

(Collectively “Collected Data”)

These driving events will be assessed and contextualized based on various factors, such as:

  • Severity of the event (e.g. how far above the speed limit you drive);
  • Speed at which event was registered;
  • Time of day and day of the week you drive;
  • Driving and road conditions;
  • Your total distance driven (i.e., if we do not collect sufficient data to assess your driving behaviour, you may not be entitled to an Adjustment or the Adjustment you receive might have lesser impact on your renewal premium);
  • Previous Collected Data;
  • Road types (e.g., highway, urban or rural);
  • Left or right turns; and
  • Traditional rating factors (e.g., age and region).

This information is reviewed to offer you a personalized premium and allows you to influence your car insurance premiums.

As long as we have recorded enough driving behaviour (i.e., if you drive 500 kilometres (“km”) or more), we can apply your premium Adjustment upon renewal. If you did not drive at least 500 km, you might not receive any premium Adjustment, or your Adjustment might have a smaller impact. We'll start considering your trips once you start driving again. The more you drive the more significant your Adjustment becomes. For example, someone who completed 500 km of safe driving and then turns off their app will not receive the same premium Adjustment as someone who drives 5,000 or 10,000 kilometres with their app recording all their trips.

Can the cost of my car insurance increase because of my Drive?

Stroke 1 Copy

Yes, the premium of your car insurance could increase or decrease when your policy is renewed. This depends on your driving habits and those of the Enrolled Drivers listed on your insurance policy. You might see an increase or decrease of up to 25% based on your driving habits, but pricing factors other than the my Drive premium Adjustment may also have an impact on your premium at renewal.

What driving behaviour is displayed in the app?

Stroke 1 Copy

my Drive helps you drive safer by summarizing your driving data to allow you to assess your driving behaviours such as:

  • Safe speed (i.e., if you obey posted speed limits);
  • Smoothness (i.e., do you brake harshly and/or corner too quickly?); and
  • Focus (i.e., do you use your cell phone while driving?).

The app will also provide you with a visualization of how well you are driving; if it indicates that you are a predominantly safe driver, it will likely result in a premium decrease. If it indicates that you are generally a riskier driver, you can expect it to result in an increase in premium.

For more details, refer to the my Drive section of the Intact Insurance App under the "Make every trip count" section once you have received your renewal, or at any other time to see how you are doing. For example:

  •  If the gauge visual in the app shows you at the far right of the green half of the gauge, you could see a decrease in premium between 10% and 25%.
  • If you are in the middle of the gauge, you might not receive any Adjustment (i.e., 0%) or you may see a small increase or decrease in premium between 1% and 10%.
  • If it shows you at the far left of the orange half of the gauge, you could see an increase in premium between 10% and 25%.

Please note that this is simply an estimate of how the visualization translates into an Adjustment. There are factors other than your my Drive participation that influence your premium at renewal and are used to calculate increases or decreases. As a result, we make no representations about the accuracy of the example.

Review your app regularly to improve your driving behaviours.

How can my Drive help me improve my driving behaviour?

Stroke 1 Copy

Your app will show your results for each trip. There are 3 badges available for each trip: Safe speed, Smoothness, and Focus. To achieve the Safe speed badge, you should drive within the speed limit at all times. For the Smoothness badge, you must brake and accelerate smoothly, and to earn the Focus badge you must focus on the road and avoid using your smartphone while driving.

Getting all three badges on a trip generally means that the trip may contribute towards a premium decrease at renewal. Failing to get any badges may generally mean that the trip will be considered a trip with risky behaviour and may contribute towards a premium increase at renewal. One bad trip or one good trip will not have a large impact; we look at all your trips cumulatively. Keep in mind that many other factors may impact your premium Adjustment outside of the badges earned on individual trips. Reviewing your app regularly can help you have a price that’s right for you and make improvements to your driving behaviours where necessary.

For example: The driver of this trip likely used their phone during the trip, so they only received the Safe speed and Smoothness badges. If they don’t use their phone on the next trip, then they may earn the Focus badge.

How many kilometres do I need to drive?

Stroke 1 Copy

Enrolled drivers must drive a minimum of 500 kilometres in order to establish an Adjustment. The more you drive the more accurate picture of your driving behaviour we'll get and the more personalized your premium will be.

If you do not drive the minimum, you will not be unenrolled from my Drive. However, you may not be provided with an Adjustment, or the impact of the Adjustment might be less significant. For more details, see the “How do you calculate the Adjustment of my personalized premium?” question.

When will the price of my car insurance change?

Stroke 1 Copy

Your premium will change upon renewal. The Enrolled Driver’s trips have been collected throughout the year so their Collected Data can be used to determine the Adjustment at renewal. This could result in a premium increase or decrease.

How much will my driving behaviour affect my premium?

Stroke 1 Copy

As you drive, your driving behaviour is collected and assessed to adjust your insurance premium. So, by driving safely you could get a premium reduction of up to 25%. Whereas more risky driving could mean a premium increase of up to 25%.

Here is an example for a $1,000 annual vehicle premium:

If you are a new automobile client who activated my Drive, you will receive a one-time Activation Discount: the vehicle premium will be reduced by 10%, i.e., to approximately $900 for the year.

At renewal and each future renewal your annual vehicle premium will be adjusted based on your driving behaviour and your Adjustment could vary between:

  • a maximum decrease of 25% bringing the premium to $750/ year
  • a maximum increase of 25% bringing the premium to $1250/ year

However, upon renewal, the premium may also be increased or decreased based on rating factors other than a change in your Adjustment based on your driving behaviour.

See “How can I find out how my driving behaviour is affecting my premium?” for details.

How can I find out how my driving behaviour is affecting my premium?

Stroke 1 Copy

Refer to the my Drive section of the Intact Insurance App under the "Make every trip count" section once you have received your renewal, or at any other time to see how you are doing.

On what coverage can my Adjustment be applied?

Stroke 1 Copy

Your personalized premium will be applied to the following Intact Insurance car insurance coverage (where applicable):

  • Liability (Bodily Injury and Property Damage)
  • Direct Compensation - Property Damage;
  • Accident Benefits (Standard Benefits);
  • Uninsured Automobile;
  • Collision or Upset;
  • Comprehensive;
  • All Perils;
  • Specified Perils.

For more details on the coverages listed above, please consult your policy documents.

What happens if my car is in storage?

Stroke 1 Copy

You will remain enrolled even if you put your vehicle in storage. If you are driving another vehicle, your driving behaviour will continue to be collected. If you are not driving another vehicle, we will be able to start recording your trips again when you start driving. As per the Terms of Use, previously Collected Data from the stored vehicle may still be used to calculate your Adjustment.

I can't find the amount of my Adjustment in the app. Why?

Stroke 1 Copy

You will not see a specific amount in the app as my Drive monitors your driving habits to personalize your premium when your car insurance is renewed. In addition to the information available in the app, policyholders will receive a quarterly email with updates. You will see if you're on your way to a premium increase or a decrease.

See “How can I find out how my driving behaviour is affecting my premium?” for details.

Clients who enrolled before April 10, 2022, and are migrating to the new my Drive

We've made some changes and updates to my Drive. If you have migrated from the previous version, you may notice some changes in the way your app looks, including the absence of your discount amount. my Drive now integrates your driving behaviour into your premium alongside other rating variables. Your driving behaviours will be used to personalize your premium when your car insurance is renewed. As a result, you will not see a specific amount associated with your participation in the app or on your insurance documents. A quarterly email will be sent out in addition to the information shown on your app to let you know how you are doing. You can see if you are trending for a decrease or increase upon renewal and either continue doing what you are doing or take measures to improve your driving behaviour.

See “How can I find out how my driving behaviour is affecting my premium?” for details.

What do I do if I no longer have access to my Drive?

Stroke 1 Copy

If you simply uninstalled the app, please see the question, “What happens if I deleted the Intact Insurance App?”.

If you opted out of my Drive, you will no longer have access to the my Drive section in the app. To know if your driving behaviour is still being used to make Adjustments to your premium, please refer to your Certificate of Automobile Insurance (the “Certificate”). The information printed there will indicate if you are still enrolled or if you were removed from my Drive. If there is no mention of my Drive on the Certificate, then you are not enrolled or are no longer enrolled and there is no Collected Data being used to determine your premium.

If you want to know if your policy is receiving a premium increase or decrease because of your previously Collected Data, you could refer to your previous quarterly email or contact your broker or insurance representative for more detail. If you want to discuss if re-enrolling is right for you, please contact your broker or insurance representative.
