Protecting the next 150 years

Climate change, the many ways we make a difference

As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, we are dedicated to climate change adaptation and ensuring our country stays as resilient as ever. This year, each edition of The Coverage will feature an article that speaks to Intact’s commitment to help Canadians protect their communities.

Finding solutions for climate change adaptation

Every Canadian has felt the effects of climate change in recent years. Building on an innovative climate adaptation research project between Intact Financial Corporation and the University of Waterloo, we collaboratively announced the launch of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation™(Intact Centre) in November of 2015.

This national applied research centre, focuses on bringing practical and cost-effective solutions to address climate change and extreme weather events; the Intact Centre functions as an incubator to promote new ideas on how our country can adapt to the ever-changing weather.

This includes the development of a Natural Infrastructure Adaptation Program (NIAP) to help communities across Canada reduce the risk of flooding.

Contributing to the First Summit on Green Infrastructure in Montréal

Intact Foundation works alongside The David Suzuki Foundation to strengthen the resilience of our cities to climate change.

Since its inception in 1991, The David Suzuki Foundation’s mission has been to defend the diversity of nature and the quality of life for Canadians.

Together, we have made it possible for the first summit on Green Infrastructure to take place in Montréal. During this summit, a group of community and environmental experts came together to identify solutions to preserve, highlight and develop natural infrastructures in the Greater Montréal area.

Preparing New Brunswickers for extreme weather

The Conservation Council of New Brunswick (CCNB) is a Canadian registered charity that creates awareness of environmental problems and advances practical solutions through research, education and interventions. The CCNB recently examined how to better prepare for extreme weather events with the support of the Intact Foundation. Given the devastation of tropical storm Arthur in 2014 the CCNB, in partnership with the University of New Brunswick, facilitated a community capacity assessment for Fredericton and Keswick Ridge. This assessment focused on evaluating their adaptability to extreme weather events.

This initiative applies to every community, as climate change adaptation becomes more and more urgent. Sustainability of our beautiful country is truly at the Conservation Council of New Brunswick’s core.

Promoting healthy landscapes through key decision makers in the Rockies

We support the Miistakis Institute for the Rockies, which works to educate key decision makers on how to promote healthy landscapes through low-cost, solutions to some of the issues associated with climate change.

Their areas of focus are citizen science for conservation, market-based tools, ecosystem services, conservation Geographic Information System (GIS), sustainable landscapes and communities, transportation ecology, private land conservation, and wildlife management.

At Intact Insurance one of our core values is social responsibility; with that commitment we respect the environment and its finite resources, make our communities safer, healthier and happier, and encourage our employees to become involved in the cause.

Climate change has a significant impact on all of us and it is our responsibility to respect the environment. This belief drives us to work alongside like-minded initiatives to strengthen the resilience of this country for the next 150 years and beyond.

Stay tuned for our summer edition, where we’ll take a deeper look into the initiatives of the Intact Centre for Climate Adaptation!
