Intact Insurance and Fire Departments Working Together to Help Save Lives

In the insurance industry, fire is one of the greatest hazards for our customers. The tremendous impact fire has on people was recently shown in the devastating Millrise condominium fire in Calgary that decimated more than 150 units. To help Calgarians prevent fires in their homes, Intact Insurance is once again partnering with the Calgary Fire Department as the title sponsor of the Intact Insurance Home Safety Program.

Now in its ninth year, the program was launched May 10 close to the site of the destructive Millrise fire. City fire fighters went door-to-door and cover fire safety with residents. This includes examining smoke detectors to ensure they are properly placed and working correctly, and that families have discussed and put a plan in place to exit their home safely should there be a fire. Fire officials also provided a Home Fire Safety Checklist; these give Calgarians the opportunity to review their homes fire safety “grade” on their own and make changes to help prevent a fire in their home.

As part of the program, the City of Calgary’s Fire Department will also help people identify other hazards in their homes, such as poisons and items that could cause a fall. Intact Insurance is pleased to be a part of this prevention program alongside the Calgary Fire Department, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary of operation this year.

Not only does Intact Insurance sponsor the Home Safety Program in Calgary, but it also supports the City of Red Deer Emergency Services in bringing it to the residents of Red Deer. Running from March until October, the program has been in operation since 2005. As of the fall of 2009, more than 4,000 smoke alarms had been given out and approximately 16,000 residences had been visited.
