What is my Driving Discount®?
Most Frequently Asked Questions
What is the my Driving Discount®?
The my Driving Discount is the Intact insurance program that offers you a personalized discount based on your driving habits (braking, acceleration, and time of day the vehicle is used, all in relation to the total number of kilometres driven). The better your driving habits, the more you could save!
What’s in it for me?
Not only could you save up to 25% on your car insurance premium once you complete your assessment period, but you’ll also receive valuable information about your driving habits.
Is there an enrollment cost?
No, there is no charge for enrolling in the my Driving Discount program.
Can my premium go up because of the driving data (braking, acceleration and time of day of vehicle use)?
No, the data used to establish your potential savings cannot increase your premium. On the contrary, you automatically receive a 5% enrollment discount off your premium, and at the end of the 180-day assessment period you could get a total discount of up to 25 %, depending on the driving habits.
How do I sign up?
If you already have an automobile insurance policy with us, you can enroll in the my Driving Discount program with your broker (subject to meeting the eligibility criteria). If you are looking to insure your vehicle with Intact Insurance and sign up for my Driving Discount, you can fill out an online quote on our website or contact your broker.
What factors are taken into consideration when calculating my discount?
Following completion of the assessment period, your enrollment discount may be replaced by a personalized final discount (the myDriving Discount) that takes into account:
- based on the number of kilometres driven:
- a. time of day that the vehicle is driven;
- b. hard braking events;
- c. rapid acceleration events; and
- the information in your insurance file you have provided us with (e.g., postal code, age).
The my Driving Discount is not static and is subject to change upon each renewal of your insurance policy, as of the second renewal following your enrollment in the program.
Hard Braking
Hard braking increases the risk of being involved in an accident. The system therefore determines a risk factor relative to hard braking by calculating the ratio of hard braking on the total km driven. A hard braking event is defined as any decrease of speed by more than 12 km/h in less than one second.
Rapid Acceleration
Rapid acceleration increases the risk of being involved in an accident. The system therefore determines a risk factor relative to rapid accelerations by calculating the ratio of rapid acceleration on the total km driven. Rapid acceleration is defined as any increase of speed by more than 12 km/h in less than one second.
Time of day
Driving at night (between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m.) increases the risk of being involved in an accident. Many elements, such as reduced visibility and fatigue, make this time of day the riskiest. The system therefore uses the times of day that you’re driving to determine your personalized night-time driving factor. The less the vehicle is used at night, the more you could save.
What happens after I sign up?
We will send your my Driving Discount device in the mail. Just plug it in to your OBD (onboard diagnostics) port and drive as you normally do. After you connect your device, we’ll send you an email containing all the information you need to log on to your my Driving Discount and see your driving profile and potential discount. Your first update on your potential savings will be sent to you 30 days after you connect the my Driving Discount device in your vehicle.
How long will my discount apply?
Your 5% enrollment discount applies as soon as you join the my Driving Discount program. Once the 180-day assessment period is over, it will be replaced, if applicable, by the my Driving Discount for the remainder of the policy’s term, if the my Driving Discount is equal to or greater than the enrollment discount. The my Driving Discount is not static and is subject to change the second renewal following your enrollment in the program.
If the enrollment discount is greater than the my Driving Discount, the enrollment discount will continue to apply until the end of your current policy’s term. At your next policy renewal, you will no longer be eligible to receive either an enrollment discount or the my Driving Discount.
Can I change my mind and opt out of the program? If so, will my insurance policy be cancelled?
This program is voluntary. You may opt out at any time during the assessment period and your insurance policy will NOT be cancelled. However, as of the date you withdraw, you will no longer be eligible for the discounts available under the my Driving Discount program.
If you do opt out, we will send you a prepaid envelope in the mail. All you have to do is put the device in the envelope and mail it back to us.
How can I benefit from the maximum discount?
The better you drive the more you could save. Try to avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking. But your safety must always come first: if you have to accelerate or brake suddenly to avoid an accident, don’t hesitate to do so! Also, the times of day when the vehicle is used affect your discount, so the less driving is done during high-risk periods, the more you could save.
Who is eligible for the my Driving Discount?
A principal driver who has enrolled in the program may obtain this discount for all vehicles of which he or she is the principal driver.
Can I restart the program if I don’t like my final discount?
No. You cannot restart the program because the driving data has already been collected.
Once the final discount is generated by the accumulated driving data, is it retroactive?
No. If applicable, the discount based on driving activity will be applied after the completion of the assessment period, which consists of 180 days of collecting data.
How can I save more?
With Intact Insurance, there are many ways to save, such as Synchro Insurance and the multi-vehicle discount. Call your broker to find out which discounts you may qualify for.
What other insurance coverage can I get from Intact Insurance?
Combine your home and car insurance to get additional protection and take advantage of premium discounts. Ask an insurance broker to recommend the policy that best suits your needs.
If I have to brake hard to avoid an accident, will that reduce my discount?
WWe look for a driver’s usual behavior and the frequency of events like hard braking. We know that even the best drivers sometimes need to stop suddenly. One or two instances of hard braking will not necessarily reduce your potential discount. The most important thing is to keep you and your passengers safe. So, if you need to hit the brakes to avoid an accident, don’t think twice!
The information in my profile was recorded when someone else was driving my vehicle. Since I am not the one responsible, what happens?
The program is intended to evaluate the principal driver, but the assessment is also meant to include all other drivers who use the vehicle during a 180-day period.
What happens if a driver has an accident while using the my Driving Discount device?
Accidents are not taken into consideration when calculating your savings with my Driving Discount. However, the accident may have an impact on your insurance premium because of our rating guidelines.
If I work night shifts, will that have an impact on my potential discount?
Statistically, you are more likely to be involved in an accident between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. Therefore, any driving during these hours is taken into consideration when calculating your final discount. However, night-time driving is just one of the risk factors that affect your potential savings. The my Driving Discount program also considers rapid accelerations and hard braking to determine the final discount.
If I usually drive 110 km/h on the highway, will I be penalized?
Speed is not taken into consideration when calculating your potential discount. However, drivers who speed are more likely to have hard braking and rapid acceleration events. These two factors (as well as the times of day when the vehicle is driven) are taken into consideration when calculating your final discount.

The my Driving Discount device works throughout Canada and the United States. You’ll be able to access all your driving data by logging in to the my Driving Discount Dashboard at mydrivingdiscount.intact.ca.
Does the my Driving Discount device track the vehicle wherever it goes?

The my Driving Discount device uses GPS and tracks all trips recorded by this system.
What do I have to do at the end of the my Driving Discount program?
Once you’ve completed the assessment period, you will receive an email with instructions. Shortly thereafter, you will receive a prepaid envelope in the mail. All you have to do is put the device in the envelope and mail it back to us.
What do I do if I change vehicles?
During the driving data collection period
If you change vehicles during the assessment period, please contact your broker to make arrangements for transferring the device to your new vehicle.
Outside of the driving data collection period
If you are not in a driving data collection period, just tell your broker about the change of vehicles.
Will I keep the my Driving Discount premium reduction if I get another car?
