We proved that insurance is not about things – it’s about people: The Calgary Hailstorm
On Monday, July 12 at approximately 2 p.m., Calgary and its surrounding areas experienced a hail storm of a magnitude that is rarely seen in Canada.
Although we’d all prefer these types of disasters to simply not happen, Intact Insurance is dependent on our ability to get customers back on track when disasters strike. And getting our customers back on track is exactly what we did.
Immediately after the storm, our Catastrophe Response Team was quickly mobilized to ensure that our customers were taken care of with the least amount of disruption to their daily lives.
For our auto customers, that meant the creation of several drive-in appraisal and repair centres to speed up the claims experience: customers could have their car assessed, get smaller dents fixed, and arrange for a rental car if necessary, all in one visit.
On the property side – our customers could count on having their home or business visited by one of our professionals within one week of making their claim, weather permitting. To help speed things along, we brought in contractors from outside the Calgary area. In most cases, contractors are able to start repairs within days of receiving authorization from the customer.
Adjusters at Intact call centres across the country and at drive-in centres have processed approximately 6,500 auto and 2,650 property insurance claims.
Despite these large numbers, we’re proud to say that all of our customers are being looked after. Appraisals have been completed for a majority of our auto claims, which is an extraordinary number when you consider that each appraisal takes at least 45 minutes to complete. We’re also happy to report that some customers have already had the damage to their property fixed.
